New York Times: An Indian tribe on Martha’s Vineyard said Tuesday that it had obtained approval from a federal agency to open a casino on tribal land on the resort island, but others challenged that conclusion and said the tribe had no such authority.

The tribe’s announcement reopened a long-running dispute with the state and local governments, which have maintained that the tribe, the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah), forfeited its right to build a casino on the Vineyard in the 1980s when it agreed to a land settlement. Continue reading….
